FEP (Fluorinated ethylene propylene) is a high-performance fluoropolymer. Here is a detailed introduction about FEP:
Basic Characteristics
Chemical Structure: FEP is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene. The content of hexafluoropropylene is approximately 15% to 18%, and it is a modified material of polytetrafluoroethylene
Physical Properties: The crystalline melting point is 580℉ (about 304℃), the density is 2.15g/CC (grams per cubic centimeter), and it has a low dielectric constant (2.1). It remains stable over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies .
Mechanical Properties: Although FEP is a soft plastic, its mechanical properties such as tensile strength and wear resistance are superior to those of polytetrafluoroethylene, and it has good creep resistance .
Thermal Properties: The melting point is between 250-280℃, the glass transition temperature is approximately 80℃, the long-term operating temperature range is -200℃ to 200℃, and the maximum temperature it can withstand is 205℃. It has good thermal stability .
Chemical Properties: It has similar excellent chemical resistance to polytetrafluoroethylene, and can resist the corrosion of all chemical substances almost completely. It only reacts with fluorine elements, molten alkali metals, and trifluorochlorine under high temperatures .
Electrical Properties: It has excellent electrical insulation properties. Its dielectric coefficient remains basically unchanged over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies, and the tangent of the dielectric loss angle varies with frequency, but is less affected by temperature .
Other Characteristics: The friction coefficient is low, it does not ignite, it can prevent the spread of flames, it has excellent weather resistance, and it remains transparent under ultraviolet radiation .

FAQ
Q1: What are the basic characteristics of FEP?
Chemical inertness: Resistant to strong acids, strong bases and organic solvents (similar to PTFE).
Temperature resistance: Continuous operating temperature range is approximately -200°C to +205°C.
Transparency: Semi-transparent to transparent, superior to PTFE.
Electrical properties: Low dielectric constant (2.1), excellent insulation.
Surface properties: Non-stick, low friction coefficient, but can be melt processed (different from PTFE).
Q2:Typical application fields of FEP?
Electrical wires and cables: Insulation layer for high-frequency data transmission lines (such as 5G cables).
Chemical industry: Anti-corrosion linings, pipes, valve linings.
Medical: Biocompatible catheters, reagent containers.
Photovoltaics: Solar backsheet films (with excellent weather resistance).
Laboratory equipment: Transparent reaction vessels, pipettes.

Q3: Processing precautions for FEP?
Melt temperature: approximately 260 - 310°C (precise control is required to prevent decomposition).
Mold design: shrinkage rate is about 3 - 6%, and processing allowance needs to be reserved.
Cleaning requirements: Before processing, contaminants in the raw materials must be thoroughly removed.
